Akpabio As Senate President Represents An Intelligent Political Choice
In the last two weeks or more the country has been awash with media releases, reports, and sponsored Kangaroo Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) drumming support for all and sundry lobbying to be the Senate President, the Deputy Senate President, the Speaker of the House of Representatives and or his/her Deputy respectively.
The Southeast block in the Senate had left no one in doubt as to its intention to clinch the coveted seat.
Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, a man who spearheaded the presidential drive of the current Senate President, Ahmad Lawan (ahead of the APC primaries) sought the seat with such fervency as the drippings of cold winter.
Some commentators had said that Senator Kalu thought, dreamt, and wore the ambition of becoming the Senate President for the 10th National Assembly like the proverbial "ibi" troubling the town crier which could not help but betray him as he went about the community bearing his tales.
But you wouldn't fault the man after all he is a ranking Senator, not minding his postulations all the while, in the run-up to the presidential election, which betrayed his tribe, the Igbos, and his region, the Southeast, for his ambition.
Perhaps it is too early to 'display the 32' against the background that something, whatever could happen; happen you say?
This seeming tragic-comedy is no doubt 'Nimrodic'; a man who joins strangers to murder his kinsmen will have to live with the burden on his conscience, that is if the gods elect to keep him alive and in the midst of humans.
To think that the President-elect, Bola Tinubu, would through the APC pick Godswill Akpabio from the South-South after various considerations, instead of a man who killed his kinsmen over the scent of Whiskey in the white man's kitten, tells volume.
A man who trusts someone who betrayed his own for a bite at the pie does so at his own risk.
Plus, politics like prostitution is mostly influenced by ethical choices and their consequences, such that those who queued behind the one who was asked to go and lick his wound should show Camaraderie, and join him in the sojourn.
The APC has made a critical political decision by zoning the Senate Presidency to the South-South, and in effect, picking Senator Godswill Akpabio, as the Chairman of the 10th National Assembly.
The incoming Senate President has an enviable track record in public office to match the new role.

His total commitment to the peace, unity, and development of the country is second to none, as his sagacity for making the right decisions can 99.99 not be faulted.
Moreover, he has emphasized that as Senate President he would work closely with the President-Elect to empower Nigerians, particularly the youths.
Hear him, “A lot of reforms, Akpabio is known as an uncommon transformer. Akpabio is known as a man who is results-oriented. You will recall that when I was a governor, I brought a lot of innovations to bear, infrastructurally, educationally, socially, and otherwise, and also in terms of human empowerment.
“I intend to bring a lot of reforms into the Senate, in the ways and manners we do business, to assist the next administration to succeed. We will be very thorough in doing everything; we’ll bring about loyalty to the Constitution, and we’ll bring about loyalty to Nigerians.
“We will tackle issues through legislation to empower Nigerians and particularly the youth. With the restiveness that we are seeing across the nation, we’ll do our best to make good laws and to assist the administration to bring about policies that will empower the youths of the country.
“I made that promise even on the convention day that being a man who used to turn boys into men and who still does, I will like to work with the incoming president, who has also shown that example in Lagos State as a governor and thereafter as a leader of the APC in Nigeria. He has continued to turn boys into men and as the President of the Country, after his swearing-in, I expect that he will continue to do so.
“So the youths are in for a very good time, in terms of empowerment, there will be no time for slacking and we’ll restrict a lot of them from being lured into criminality, into brigandage and all that. So we’ll get them working and I believe that with the help of the Almighty that both the National Assembly and the Executive will do a lot for the youths of this country”.
At the moment in our national life, we cannot afford not to have an Akpabio to bring creativity to a Senate accused of being a "rubber stamp" appendage to Aso Rock.
No doubt we don't need a same-page scenario Senate again, but we also don't anticipate a cantankerous legislature cum executive relationship.
